Breastfeeding Without Blankets Blog Carnival

September 18th, 2008 · 9 Comments

I wouldn’t describe myself as an activist. Yet, of late an issue of rights and equality has caught my attention, and has certainly stirred up outrage among the feared online pundits, The Mommy Bloggers.

Because I don’t have any children, and don’t have the experience with breastfeeding to be able to express my own outrage at the trials of being a breastfeeding mother, I’ve compiled a blog carnival of sorts - a breastfeeding-rights carnival with a few good posts on the subject. (If you’ve got a post and I missed it, send it in and I’ll add it here.)

Thanks to Her Bad Mother, WestJet has been the target of some angry, lactating, wordsmithing women. I’m grateful that they have been fighting this fight, so that one day I too will be able to feed my children in public. Without a blanket.

Her Bad Mother kicked it all off with this story, Under The Blanket. It will make you angry and sad. She then followed up a few days later with an update on how the company responded. Hint: rhymes with sadly, starts with a “B.”

That’s when it started to get ugly. The Mommy Bloggers responded with the following:

Mamalooper was short but to the point - you don’t eat your lunch in a bathroom stall, and neither should my baby. Nice. Check out the cool t-shirt picture on her post.

Shannon writes from the heart as a traveling mother, giving WestJet everything they could ever want to know about what it’s like to have a hungry baby on a plane.

Miss Grace has her own maddening story of the trials of breastfeeding, and she’s rightly joined the send-WestJet-a-nasty-letter group.

And over at Twenty Years Early, the issue sparked enough of a response to get her to break her own rule and get involved in the blogging world of debates. Welcome!

The Littany of Brittany has a rant for you, with the fun title, My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard.

Taking a Chance on Baby says it best, “If I wanted a blanket, I’d bring my own, as would any woman who prefers to cover up.”

Over at Michelle’s Blog, she’s posted a copy of the letter she sent WestJet. You go girl!

And Working on Perfect explains how the issue has highlighted something important to us Canadians; we value our rights!

Momily takes the discussion further, by requesting that nursing mothers (and the people who scowl at them) just stop the booby judgments.

Half-Baked suggests that the worst part of the whole ordeal was that it was a woman who made the initial request. Don’t women understand women - and can’t we all just get along?

Broad Spot is like me - we’re just happy that breastfeeding women are paving the way for when it’s our turn. Thank you.

So WestJet? Suck it. Babies need to be fed on your planes too, and their mommies are not happy.
