At Teach US History, you can read original texts from “significant events” in U.S. History. I found an excerpt on the site from The Young Man’s Guide (published in 1839), Advice on Choosing a Wife.
The advice is somewhat humorous now, but overall it’s mostly still true. Although this section of The Young Man’s Guide relates to “Female Qualifications for Marriage,” I think it’s applicable to all of us.

I’m not much for my birthday or commercial and religious holidays, but I do love Frank’s birthday because it is a day when I get to show him how much he means to me by going crazy and planning a whole day full of surprises.
